Your privacy

Action for Bhopal (AfB) is committed to ensuring that your privacy is protected. Any information that you provide when using this website, by which you can be identified, will only be used in accordance with this privacy statement.

This document, effective from 16th December 2018, sets out our privacy policy, in line with the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). We will keep this policy under review and will update it from time to time in line with new developments. So we encourage you to check this page occasionally for any changes.

1. Who are we?

Action for Bhopal is concerned at the plight of the people of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India, whose health is still being damaged after the leak of poison gas in 1984 from the Union Carbide plant, and the continuing contamination of the soil and water by toxic chemicals remaining on the site. We aim to promote the clean-up of the site. We also aim to promote improved compensation for those affected, and support for the Bhopal Medical Appeal.

2. What data do we collect and what do we do with it?

Web forms on our website

As part of our campaigning activities we sometimes ask people to submit information to our website via web forms. These will usually ask for a name and an email address and some additional information that is helpful for a campaign. The web form should set out the reasons we are collecting specific data. We will never share this information with other organisations for marketing purposes.

Mailing lists

We do collect some personal information in the signup for our e-newsletter. We use this information to deliver the the ones you’ve signed up for but we do not sell or trade or mailing lists with other organisations. People are only added to these mailing lists after they opt-in to receive them, we do not add people without their explicit consent.

We use a third-party provider, MailChimp, to deliver our newsletter. We gather statistics around email opening and clicks using industry standard technologies to help us monitor and improve our e-newsletter. For more information, please see MailChimp’s privacy notice. You can unsubscribe to general mailings at any time of the day or night by clicking the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any of our emails.

3. Access to your personal data

Under GDPR you have the right to access, amend or delete any information we hold about you. If you would like to do so please send a request to our office at actionforbhopal@myphone.coop or call 0208 671 8037.

4. How long do we keep your data?

We only keep your data for as long as it reasonable or necessary, or for as long as we are required to hold it to fulfil statutory obligations.

5. What happens in the event of data breaches?

The GDPR requires that the Information Commissioner is notified within 72 hours of the discovery of a breach which poses a risk to any individuals. If the breach is ‘high risk’, i.e. it might cause discrimination, identity theft, fraud, damage to reputation or financial loss, the data subject must be notified as well. We will seek to minimise all risks of data breaches but should one occur we will act swiftly to notify the relevant people.

6. What is our legal basis for processing supporter data?

Action for Bhopal’s Privacy Policy is designed to ensure the charity’s compliance with the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (EC Directive) (Amendment) 2011.
