Parliamentary debate and drop-in to call for justice for the survivors and victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy

Labour Member of Parliament for Stockport secures parliamentary debate and drop-in to call for justice for the survivors and victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy

Navendu Mishra, the Labour Member of Parliament for Stockport, secured a Westminster Hall debate in Parliament on Tuesday 15th November to raise awareness about the Bhopal gas tragedy, which occurred thirty-eight years ago in December 1984. The debate followed a drop-in hosted by Mr Mishra and groups, including Action for Bhopal.

The Bhopal gas tragedy occurred on the evening of 2nd December 1984 when over 500,000 people were exposed to methyl isocyanate following a leak at a Union Carbide pesticide plant in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. This tragic incident is commonly regarded as the worst industrial disaster to have ever taken place in the world..

Ever since the tragedy, Indian and international groups have been campaigning for justice for the victims and survivors, which includes compensation, environmental remediation, medical care and research.

In his speech in Westminster Hall, Navendu Mishra MP called on the Government to put pressure on Dow Chemicals, the parent company of Union Carbide, to accept the “polluter pays” principle adhered to in both the USA & India and take responsibility for remunerations, adding that: “for the victims, their children and their families, whose lives and livelihoods have been affected by the events on the evening of 2nd December 1984, today is important because it should be the start of our country’s contribution to their campaign for justice”.
